ForewordDear Colleague, This TMS initiated and sponsored symposium is being organized to honor the very distinguished work and lifetime achievements of Prof. Akira Yazawa in Metallurgical and Materials Processing. Prof. Yazawa is renowned for his impact in extractive metallurgy of copper as well as in that of Zn, Pb, Ni, Sn, Sb, Au, Hg and Cd. His over 300 publications have dealt with a variety of subjects such as slag, alloys, matte, speiss, aqueous solutions, alcohols, algae etc. The topics of this symposium will reflect this rich and colorful activity and will cover simultaneously the thermophysicochemical fundamentals of metallurgical and materials processing, their industrial applications as well as the development of new and improved technologies in non-ferrous, ferrous and hydro-metallurgy, materials processing and in materials-related environmental science. The papers will be published in a separate proceeding, which will be available at the time of the symposium. The industrial companies will also have the opportunity to advertise themselves in several ways by sponsoring the symposium through small fees/donations. The conference will be held from 3 to 6 March 2003 in San Diego, California, one of the most interesting cities of USA West Coast, in conjunction with TMS Annual Meeting 2003. Building over the experience of previous successful international symposiums a combination of classical and new formal and informal social functions are proposed for participants and accompanied persons including a quasi-karaoke evening and a special boat trip which will make the conference a memorable event. We invite you to browse the Symposium Web Site for mores specific information and to participate as an author in this very promising conference. Looking forward to meet you in San Diego Yours sincerely Organizers of the symposium
