SIRBESCU INTERNATIONAL SYMPOSIUM

on Geochemistry for Sustainable Development (5th Intl. Symp.)

Bio | CV | Publications
This major symposium is in honor of the distinguished work, career, and lifetime achievements of Dr. Mona Sirbescu, a very well-known professional with deep impact in geochemistry for sustainable development.

Mona Sirbescu is a geologist and geochemist whose research has contributed to advancing the understanding of critical mineral resources essential to the global energy transition. She is Professor of Geology at Central Michigan University, within an interdisciplinary, undergraduate-focused Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences, where she serves as Geology Program Director. Dr. Sirbescu received her Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Bucharest, Romania, her M.S. from Binghamton University, and her Ph.D. from the University of Missouri. She was among the first to demonstrate that pegmatite - key hosts of critical mineralization - can form through disequilibrium crystallization from magma at unusually low temperatures, as constrained by studies of fluid and melt inclusions in natural systems. Since joining Central Michigan University in 2001, Sirbescu has sustained an active research program on pegmatites while developing and teaching courses in Mineralogy, Petrology, Critical Raw Materials, and Geomath. A significant advancement in her work occurred during a 2009 sabbatical, when she conducted high-pressure and temperature experiments as a Visiting Research Fellow at the Helmholtz Centre GFZ in Potsdam, Germany, with subsequent research visits in 2012, 2014, and 2015. These experiments validated her earlier field-based interpretations by reproducing pegmatite mineral assemblages from very low-temperature, fluid-undersaturated silicate melts. Her work has established fundamental links between undercooling, disequilibrium magmatic processes, and the formation and prospectivity of critical metal mineralization in pegmatites.

Her collaborative research on pegmatites has continued through international partnerships, including a 2025 Visiting Professor Fellowship awarded by the Research Foundation – Flanders (FWO) at KU Leuven, Belgium. In parallel, Sirbescu has expanded her work into applied pegmatite science, contributing to advances in sustainable mineral prospecting, exploration, and mining through industry collaborations. Her interdisciplinary research also encompasses soil geochemistry with implications for food security and exploration for critical minerals, as well as the development of innovative approaches integrating machine learning and portable geochemical instrumentation. Throughout her tenure at Central Michigan University, and within an undergraduate-only department, Sirbescu has mentored 45 undergraduate research projects, reflecting a sustained commitment to student-centered scholarship and experiential learning. In recognition of her combined contributions to geoscience research and education, she has been elected a Fellow of the Geological Society of America and received the American Institute of Professional Geologists–Michigan Outstanding Educator Award, as well as the Central Michigan University Excellence in Teaching Award, the institution’s highest honor.

ROUND TABLE DISCUSSIONS
A roundtable discussion open to everyone interested will be held during the symposium. This will allow high-level representatives of various industries, technologies, and academic disciplines to discuss and debate freely, without reservations, all topics of this symposium and identify possible research and development pathways towards a future industry with increased sustainability.

You are cordially invited to actively participate in this symposium by submitting and presenting a paper, or by attending the round table. We look forward to meeting you at this world class symposium.
