This major symposium is in honor of the distinguished work and lifetime achievements of Dr. Charles Andrew Tang, a very well-known professional with deep impact in Economy and Commerce for Sustainable Development.
Tang is Chairman of the Brazil-China Chamber of Commerce at the request of former Vice Premier Mr. Wu Xue Qiang in a meeting in Beijing in 1986; He is also the President of the Paraguay China Chamber of Commerce, which was granted a Presidential decree from the President of Paraguay and endorsed by its National Congress; President of ABERSH – Brazilian Association of Waste to Energy and Hydrogen; Member of the Board of CONAFER.
Was Senior Fellow of the Center for China & Globalization in Beijing; founding member of the CGTN Think Tank, Beijing, and a member of the Fernand Braudel Institute of World Economics in São Paulo. Was a member of the World Policy Institute of New York.
During 1968 Tang was transferred to work in Brazil by Deltec Banking Corp., of 45 Wall Street, an investment bank. At the time Deltec controlled the largest investment bank in Brazil, Banco de Investimento do Brasil, in partnership with Banco Moreira Salles. The Board included former finance Minister of Brazil, Marcilio Marques Moreira, among other notable Brazilians of the financial world. Tang was assistant to Roberto Teixeira da Costa, who founded the CVM (Conselho de Valores Mobiliarios) the Brazilian SEC.
Tang was again transferred to Brazil by the Bank of Boston in 1970 to Introduce leasing into Brazil and founded the first Brazilian leasing company for the bank. Subsequently, Tang left the Bank of Boston to establish the first 10 leasing companies in Brazil. He was substituted by Mr. Henrique Meirelles who became the President of the bank and then became the Minister of Finance of Brazil. At the request of former Minister of Finance of Brazil, Mr. Mario Henrique Simonsen, he founded Bozano Simonsen Leasing company; BMG Leasing, of Banco de Minas Gerais; Montreal Leasing under Canada’s Brascan; Safra Leasing requested by Mr. Joseph Safra, and 5 other major national and international banking groups.
Tang established his own leasing company, Leasecapital S. A. in a equal joint venture with the State National Bank of Maryland in 1974. Tang also established the first leasing company in Spain in 1976 in a joint venture with the former Banco del Descuento of Madrid, Spain. Leasecapital Espagna was later sold to Banco de Bilbao y Vizcaya in Spain.
During 1986, in a visit to Beijing China, former Vice Prime Minister the People’s Republic of China, Mr. Wu Xue Qiang, a classmate of Tang’s first cousin in the undergound Comunist Party of China, asked Tang to form a Brazil China Chamber to build the bridge of friendship between the two Giants. Tang was asked to deliver a message to then President Sarney of Brazil to visit China. Tang’s family worked to build China.
Honorary President, Beijing International Chamber of Commerce; Member, International Advisory Council of the Wuhan Government; Economic Advisor, Governments of Jilin City and Huainan; Special Consultant, Government of Huludao; Advisor, Government of Jiangxi Provincial Association for Friendship with Foreign Countries and the Nanning sub-council of the CCPIT; Honorary President of the Wuxi Overseas Friendship Association.
Tang’s family has a long history of service to their country. Mr. Rong Yiren, former Vice President of China was his 4th uncle by marriage. Mr. Chen Liren, former Minister of the CCCPC, was married to Tang’s first cousin Zheng Yun. Another cousin from Wuxi is the wife of former V. Premier Li Tieyin. Both relatives visited Tang in Brazil and at the time, Mr. Li Hong Zhong was the assistant to Vice Premier Li. Tang helped uncle C. Y. Tung, father of Tung Chee Hwa, first Chinese Chief Executive f Hong Kong to charter three Ultra large Petroleum tankers to Petrobras, the Brazilian National Petroleum company.
During 2023, Tang was elected to be a member of the Board of CONAFER, the Brazilian Confederation of Family Farmers and Entrepreneurs with 8 million members. Tang oversees the internationalization of CONAFER which has been saving the Amazon since 2011 with social and ecological work. CONAFER, based in Brasilia, is present in all of Brazil, with a focus on the Amazon, its indigenous tribes and the Northeast of Brazil. CONAFER is associated with a University in Manaus, the Universitas, focusing on the research and study of the biomass of the Amazon forest.
Tang was a member of the Board of CODIN – Industrial Development Company of the Government of the State of Rio de Janeiro; Councilor of the Foreign Trade Council, Federation of Commerce of São Paulo and Director, Federation of International Chambers of Commerce. Was President of the Polo Federation of Rio de Janeiro, and a member of the US and UK Polo Associations. Joined YPO at the age of 25 and was a member of WPO.
In 1981, Tang having won a major supply vessel bid with Petrobras, formed a 50/50 joint venture with Zapata, a Houston oilfield services company, founded by George H W Bush, former President of the USA. Zapata sold their interest in Marpetrol to V Ships of Monte Carlo. Among many other business achievements Tang brought JAC Motors to Brazil, invited Mr. Wang Chuanfu for dinner in São Paulo and was responsible for BYD being established in Campinas city.
Charles is quoted by The New York Times, The Economist, Financial Times, USA Today, Forbes, BBC World TV, Le Figaro, Shibom TV, KBS TV, Jiji Press, Exame and others. Charles is regularly interviewed by CGTN of China CCTV and has contributed articles to the “Folha de São Paulo”. “Estado de São Paulo”, “Globo”, “China Daily”, “International Finance News” of China’s People’s Daily, “The Economist”, “International Business Daily” of Beijing, “World Policy Journal” of New York and other distinguished publications. He authored a book, “Brazil China Alliance – A Strategy for Prosperity”, by Editora Aduaneiras in Brazil.
He has been a guest keynote speaker for The Economist, The Economist Intelligence Unit, The Financial Times, Financial Times Live, Asia Finance, Euromoney, UNCTAD’s World Investment Forum, United Nations CEPAL, UNEP at Rio+20, China Economic Review, China Mining, London Business School, University of Oxford, MIT Sloan, Yale University, Fundação Getulio Vargas, Fundação Dom Cabral, Hong Kong University S&T Business School, Mare Forum, Global China Business Meeting among others.
He holds a bachelor’s degree from Cornell University, completed law school at the Estacio de Sá University, where he was also an assistant professor of Economic Development, and has completed a doctoral course at Paris V, Sorbonne.
