MONTEIRO INTERNATIONAL SYMPOSIUM
On Composite, Ceramic & Nano Materials Processing, Characterization & Applications (10th Intl. Symp.)
Bio | CV | Publications
This major symposium is in honor of the distinguished work and lifetime achievements of Dr. Sérgio Neves Monteiro, a very well-known professional with deep impact in composite, biomaterials, and nano materials processing, characterization and applications for sustainable development.
Sergio Neves Monteiro, 81, graduated in Metallurgical Engineering from the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ) in 1966. Soon after graduation, he went to the United States to continue his education at the University of Florida (UF), invited by a visiting professor from that university. At UF he developed work on deformation of materials and obtained master’s (1968) and doctorate (1972) degrees, both in Materials Science and Engineering. In 1975, he was invited to attend an extension seminar on alternative energies at the Brazilian War College, Rio de Janeiro. In 1976 he accomplished a semestrial term at the University of Stuttgart, as part of the Brazilian-Germany Nuclear Program.
Between his masters and doctorate, he returned to UFRJ as a professor and became coordinator of the Metallurgical Engineering course, as well as he participated in the creation of the Metallurgical and Materials Engineering Program in the Institute Alberto Luiz Coimbra for Graduate Studies and Research in Engineering (COPPE). He was full professor of the Metallurgical Engineering department at UFRJ and COPPE until he retired from his post in 1993. Then he was invited by the government of the State of Rio de Janeiro to participate in the creation of the Darcy Ribeiro State University of the North of Rio de Janeiro (UENF), where he started the Advanced Materials Laboratory and became full professor. Since 2012, he has benn a collaborating full professor of the Military Institute of Engineering (IME), Rio de Janeiro. He contributed in 2020 to raise IME’s Program in Materials Science and Engineering to a top Brazilian position. He is listed in the international database as number one researcher in ballistic armor.
Throughout his career, he held various management positions at UFRJ, UENF, the Research Foundation of the State of Rio de Janeiro (FAPERJ), the Brazilian Ministry of Education (MEC), the Secretariat of Science and Technology of the State of Rio de Janeiro and the Brazilian Association of Metallurgy and Materials (ABM), where he was elected President for a two-years mandate, among other institutions.
He is holder of a fellowship 1A from the Brazilian National Research Foundation (CNPq) for scientific productivity. In 56 years of academic life, he advised more than 110 masters and doctoral dissertations and has published over 800 articles in national and international journals, over 1200 complete articles in Conference Proceedings, as well as 199 book chapters. He was one of the Editors of 14 Wiley and Springer books for the Mineral, Metals & Materials Society (TMS), USA. He has deposited 179 patents in Brazil. He was coordinator of one branch of a World Bank Science and Technological program in Brazil. He is a member of TMS and one of the coordinators of the Characterization of Minerals, Metals and Materials Annual Symposia. Since its foundation, he has been the Executive Editor of the Journal of Materials Research and Technology, an Elsevier publication.
He received awards and distinctions from ABM, FAPERJ and Institute of Superhard Materials (Ukraine), among others. He is a fellow of the American Society for Metals. He was distinguished with the Brazilian Army Medal. He became in 2020 Emeritus Professor of FAPERJ as well as in 2022 Emeritus Professor of IME.
ROUND TABLE DISCUSSIONS
A round table discussion open to everyone interested will be organized during the symposium. This will allow high level representatives of various industries, technologies, and academic disciplines to discuss and debate freely, without reservations, all topics of this symposium and identify possible research and development pathways towards a future industry with increased sustainability. Click here for a description of the topics of symposium and the round table.
You are cordially invited to actively participate in this symposium by submitting and presenting a paper, or by attending the round table. We look forward to meeting you at this world class symposium.
