SCHULTZ INTERNATIONAL SYMPOSIUM
On Science of Intelligent & Sustainable Advanced Ferromagnetic and Superconducting Magnets (SISAM) (8th Intl. Symp.)
Bio | CV | Publications
This major symposium is in honor of the distinguished work and lifetime achievements of Prof. Ludwig Schultz, a very well-known professional with deep impact on the science of intelligent & sustainable advanced ferromagnetic and superconducting magnets (SISAM) and its applications for sustainable development.
Prof. Dr Ludwig Schultz has achieved outstanding results and breakthroughs in the areas of materials science and materials innovation. The symposium entitled “8th Intl. Symp. on Science of Intelligent & Sustainable Advanced ferromagnetic and superconducting Magnets” (SISAM), to take place during the SIPS 2024 summit will explore few of his favourite topics including, but not limited to, permanent magnets, superconducting alloys and ceramics, nanomaterials, metallic glasses and compounds.
Prof. Schultz owns a PhD degree from Göttingen University and is a former post-doc fellow of IBM’s Thomas J. Watson Research Institute at Yorktown Heights, New York, USA. He took a research staff position at the Siemens Research Laboratories, Erlangen, Germany and became the head of the High Temperature Superconductors and Magnetic Materials Department of this research unit. He moved to the Technical University of Dresden when eastern and western Germanies united to take the position of Full Professor of Metallic Materials and Metal Physics and became the Director of the Institute of Metallic Materials at the Leibniz Institute of Solid State and Materials Research (IFW) Dresden. This position lasted until he retired officially in 2014. Later, his activity did not vanish nevertheless: for many years, he was the Editor-in-Chief of the famous Journal of Metals and Alloys and is today the editor-in-chief of the Journal of Alloys and Metallurgical Systems. He is a member of numerous advisory boards, a Fellow Professor of the University of Ulsan, South Korea and an affiliate member of the Low Temperature and High Field Laboratory of Wroclaw, Poland, to quote only a few of his duties. He served as the chairman of the German Association for the Advancement of Science and Medicine (GDNAE) and is now an honorary member of the German Association of Materials Science (DGM). He organized several major conferences dedicated to magnets and magnetism, including the 2014 edition of the well-known Intermag series. More details about the career and achievements of Prof. Schultz may be found in his
CV.
Ludwig Schultz was awarded many honours and prizes, in Germany as well as at international level. He is the author or the co-author of more than 1100 scientific articles. His citation index is exceptional for a materials scientist. The SISAM symposium will offer a unique opportunity to gain deep insight into the works that Prof. Schultz has dedicated to several innovative categories of materials: superconducting materials, magnetic materials, amorphous and nanocrystalline materials, and electrochemical and mechanical properties of alloys. Beyond materials science, Prof. Schultz will take us to few innovative technologies he has developed such as for example his SupraTrans II, a superconducting levitation vehicle that has now reached post-development.
Contributions, both oral and in poster form, are called (but shall not limit to) in the following areas:
- Nanocrystalline materials
- Thin films and multilayers
- Quasicrystals: preparation and processing
- Metallic glasses: formation, stability, characterization
- Preparation and processing of innovative materials in solid state
- Metallic alloys and compounds
- Mechanical properties of out-of-equilibrium materials
- Permanent magnets
- Metallic and oxide superconductors
- Innovative characterization of advanced materials
- Innovative design of permanent magnets
- Recycling of end-of-life magnets
- Superconductivity and its applications
- Levitation technologies
ROUND TABLE DISCUSSIONS
A round table discussion open to everyone interested will be organized during the symposium. This will allow high level representatives of various industries, technologies, and academic disciplines to discuss and debate freely, without reservations, all topics of this symposium and identify possible research and development pathways towards a future industry with increased sustainability. Click here for a description of the topics of symposium and the round table.
You are cordially invited to actively participate in this symposium by submitting and presenting a paper, or by attending the round table. We look forward to meeting you at the 2024 SIPS summit in Crete.
