Dr. Nina Kostevšek is a researcher at the Jozef Stefan Institute in Ljubjana, Slovenia, and works at the Department for nanostructured materials in the field of nanomedicine.
She graduated in chemistry in University of Ljubljana, Slovenia, in 2012 with the diploma thesis dedicated to Fe-Pd nanostructures for biomedical purposes. Since then is pursuing the “Nanomaterials for health” route, with her doctoral thesis being dedicated to processing the multifunctional nanomaterials with magneto-optical properties based on the Fe-Pt, Au and/or SiO2/Au systems. Since these materials combine the imaging abilities (MRI) with active therapy (photo-thermal cancer treatment) they represent a perfect “theranostic” system. During her Ph.D. period, she spent 4 months at the Department of Industrial Chemistry "Toso Montanari”, University of Bologna, Italy, developing novel magneto-optically active nanoparticles. She obtained her PhD in 2016 in Nanosciences and nanotechnologies at the International Postgraduate School Jozef Stefan, Ljubljana, Slovenia, entitled “Synthesis of hybrid nanoparticles with combined magneto-photothermal effect for medical applications”. In 2016-2017 she was as a postdoctoral fellow at the University of East Anglia, School of pharmacy, Norwich, UK, working on a smart drug delivery system for treating metastatic prostate cancer. In 2018, the scientific research council for technology of Slovenian Research Agency has recognized the study published in the journal Nanoscale “The development of hybrid nanoparticles for the cancer treatment and magnetic resonance imaging”, where she was the first author, as one of the top scientific achievements in the year 2018 (Excellent in Science 2018 award). Now she is employed at the Jozef Stefan Institute, where she obtained national funds for a 2-year post-doctoral project on the development of multi-functional liposomes.
