Paulo Santos Assis; Born in Rio Espera, Brazil, 18/03/1953
Metallurgical Engineer; M.Sc, Dr-Ing.
He holds a degree in Metallurgical Engineering from the Federal University of Minas Gerais (1975), a Gold Medal “Alcindo Vieira Prize”, a Master's Degree in Metallurgical and Mining Engineering from the Federal University of Minas Gerais (1978) and a PhD in Metallurgy from Rheinisch-Westfalische Technische Hochschule / Aachen (1991). He worked as a researcher at Acesita (now APERAM) from 1975 to 1984, as researcher and Head of Technical Steel Service at Mannesmann (now Vallourec) from 1984 to 1993. He collaborated at the Federal Fluminense University, as Visiting Professor, in Volta Redonda between 1993 and 1995 in the implementation of the Steel Excellence program through of his graduate program in metallurgy. He was advisor to CA-TEC: Engineering and Architecture Chamber of the Research Support Foundation of the State of Minas Gerais between 2001 and 2005 and Director of the Minas Gerais regional of the Brazilian Association of Metallurgy and Materials from 1996 to 2001. He was awarded three times in the Student Contest in the USA in 2009 in St Louis for the third best contribution in this section and in 2011 in Indianapolis for the second best contribution also in the same section and in 2014 in Indianapolis for the third best contribution in the area of biomass. He has coordinated more than 60 research and development projects and presented more than 240 technical contributions to national and international seminars, national and international indexed journals. He has been awarded six times in papers presented by his excellency in Brazil, respectively in 1995, 1996, 2008, 2010, 2013 and 2017, for papers; in the area of iron ore, blast furnace, energy, innovation and the environment. He has been a Full Professor at the Federal University of Ouro Preto since 1994, Honorary Professor at Hebei Technology University, Tangshan (China). Permanent Professor of REDEMAT (UEMG / UFOP) since 1996, besides being a researcher in Energy, Iron and Steel Manufacturing, Environment and Quality. Researcher at CNPq. He has experience in the area of Materials Engineering and Metallurgy, with emphasis on Extractive Metallurgy, working mainly in the following topics: steel industry: reduction and refining, injection of pulverized materials, development of new materials, environment, projects for quality improvement and increase productivity. Member of the board of EcoEnviroX. Reviewer of Technology in Metallurgy, Materials and MIneração Journal. Associate Editor of REM. Ad-hoc advisor at USP: Escola Politécnica. Coordinator of the Nucleus of Steel, Energy and Environment of the School of Mines of UFOP. Director of ABM: Brazilian Association of Metallurgy, Mining and Materials, 2013. Member of the Board of ABM, 2015 and 2017. President of the board of REDEMAT (2013-2017). Expert assistant in legal and administrative processes of the state and the federal government, in its area of competence. Participated in teacher selection competitions of USP, UFRGS, UFOP and CEFET-MG, University in Australia and in India (Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore). Status: January 2019.

BIO of Rodrigo Alvarenga Vilela

Rodrigo Vilela has been CEO of Samarco since 2018, when he took on the challenge of resuming production of the company. He is a metallurgical engineer graduated from the Federal University of Ouro Preto, with an MBA from Fundação Dom Cabral, as well as specializations in the Universities of Cambridge and Kellogg School and MIT.
He has more than 25 years of experience in the industry and in the operational management of companies such as AngloGold Ashanti, Anglo American, BHP and Vale. He is a Councillor of the Brazilian Mining Institute (IBRAM), the Federations of Industries of Minas Gerais (FIEMG) and Espírito Santo (FINDES) and the Brazilian Association of Metallurgy, Materials and Mining (ABM).

BIO of Sergio Leite de Andrade

Sergio Leite de Andrade is an established professional in the field of metallurgy and materials, with a career spanning more than 50 years at Usiminas, where he has held several executive and management positions. BIO of GS Mahobia

Dr. GS Mahobia is graduated ( Met. Engg.) in 2001 from GEC-Raipur (now NIT-Raipur); post graduated ( Met.Engg.) in 2003 from IT-BHU (Now IIT-BHU) Varanasi and obtained doctoral degree ( Met. Engg.) in 2013 from Department of Metallurgical Engineering, IIT-BHU, Varanasi. He joined M/s Jindal Steel and Power Limited (JSPL) - Raigarh (CG) in 2003 as an engineer in the DRI plant. He has obtained experience in operating a 300MT rotary kiln for sponge iron production. Dr. Mahobia joined M/s Larsen and Toubro Ltd.-Heavy Engineering Division (HED) - Surat (Gujarat) in 2004 as a PGET and rose to the level of Assistant Manager in Welding Engineering and Metallurgy. He had contributed significantly in the area of welding development, heat treatment and failure analysis up to the period of 2007. He has been awarded 1st Rank in 'Manthan' ( a focussed improvement system), 2005 and a certificate of merit for the implementation of GMAW process of welding for the first time in L&T-Surat. He has also qualified as a Six Sigma Green Belt in 2006 by Qimpro College-USA. Dr. Mahobia, joined the Metallurgical Engineering Department (IT-BHU) as Lecturer on 17th September 2007 and was promoted to Associate Professor in 16thOctober 2015. He is the Coordinator of Corrosion Fatigue Laboratory and Industrial Metallurgy Division in the Department of Metallurgical Engineering, IIT(BHU). He has published more than 40 papers in international journals and won several awards like 1994 batch Research Excellence Fellowship Award in Metallurgical Engineering instituted by the alumni of 1994 batch and Outstanding Faculty in Metallurgical Engineering' , 7th Venus International Science and Technology Awards – VISTA 2021.

BIO of Tateo Usui

Tateo Usui was born in 1946.
He graduated from Osaka University in 1969, and from Graduate School of Engineering in 1974 and got the degree of Doctor of Engineering. He worked at Osaka University from 1974 until 2010 as Assistant Professor, Associate Professor, and Full Professor.

He worked at Fukui University of Technology from 2010 until 2012 as Full Professor. From 2012 till 2017, the title of Guest Professor in Joining and Welding Research Institute, Osaka University was given to Prof. Usui. He started his third career as Visiting Professor, Federal University of Ouro Preto, Brazil, from 2013 until now.

Over the span of 55 years, his research activities focused primarily on Ironmaking including reduction behavior and kinetic analyses of iron ore agglomerates (pellets and sinter), pre-reduction behavior of iron oxide pellets with coal carbonization gas for an Iron Bath Smelting Reduction Process and rate enhancement by using semi-char and semi-charcoal for carbon composite pellets; as well as experimental and thermodynamical or kinetic studies on environmental problems (CO2 and Dioxin emissions), on refining of steel, on elimination of tramp elements from used steel, and on reduction of hydrocarbon volume in carburizing process of solid steel.

Prof. Usui was granted numerous prestigious awards for his outstanding research and academic activities such as Prize of JSME from JSME (The Japan Society of Mechanical Engineers) in 1977; Nishiyama Commemorative Prize (Scientific Achievement Commemorative Prize) from ISIJ (The Iron and Steel Institute of Japan) in 1986; Gakujutsu Kouseki Prize (Scientific Achievement Merit Prize) from ISIJ in 2006, Tanigawa – Harris Prize from JIM (The Japan Institute of Metals) in 2011; Yamaoka Prize (Joint Research Prize for distinguished Group Research Activities) from ISIJ, 6 times, in 1986, 1993, 1995, 2003, and 2013 as a member and in 2007 as the chairman; Nishiyama Medal (Academic Prize) from ISIJ and Fray International Sustainability Award from FLOGEN Star OUTREACH in March and October, 2019, respectively.

Most recently, Prof. Usui received the Iron and Steel Merit Award from ISIJ on “Fundamental Studies on Ironmaking and Steel Processing in Consideration of Resources and Environment” in March, 2020, and also won the "Special Service Award" from Japan Society for Research Policy and Innovation Management, Japan in October, 2020.

In addition, he has held distinguished Chairman positions leading the research group in ISIJ on Iron Ore Sintering Process for Limonite Ore, and heading the organizing and steering committees of international conferences such as 4th ICSTI (International Conference of Science and Technology on Ironmaking) in 2006 and ISISD (International Symposium on Ironmaking for Sustainable Development) in 2010. Currently, he is a Steering Committee Member for an Ironmaking Forum of High Temperature Process Division in ISIJ, just now from April 2022 acts as Chairman for working group on outstanding Biomass Usage in ironmaking for Carbon Neutral, and an Advisory Board Member for “The Research and Development of Ironmaking Process Using Ferro-coke,” NEDO, Japan, which was finished in March, 2023. On July 11, 2023, he was appointed as the chairman for 9th International Symposium on Advanced Sustainable Iron & Steel Making in SIPS2023 (Assis International Symposium).
