Symeon Bebelis

Short Bio:

Symeon Bebelis (born in 1959) graduated from the School of Chemical Engineering, National Technical University of Athens, Greece in 1981. He holds a PhD (1989) from the Department of Chemical Engineering, University of Patras, Greece, which he joined as Lecturer in 1993 and where he currently serves as Professor, having also served as Vice-Chair (2015 – 2018) and as Director of the Division of Chemical Technology and Applied Physical Chemistry from (2011 – 2013, 2018 - today). \r\nProfessor S. Bebelis has authored more than 75 papers in international peer-reviewed journals and scientific series (citation index: ~4200, h-index: 32, Google Scholar), as well as 3 books and chapters in books. He has over 85 presentations/participations in international conferences and summer schools (including 2 plenary, 4 keynote and 4 invited lectures, as well as 2 invited participations), and more than 35 presentations/participations in national conferences (including 2 invited lectures). \r\nHis research in catalysis, electrochemistry and electrochemical engineering has focused mainly on the application of electrochemical methods for studying and affecting catalytic reactions (electrochemical promotion of catalysis) and on the study of high and low temperature fuel cells, in particular solid oxide fuel cells (with emphasis on catalytic and electrochemical characterization of mixed conducting perovskite and cermet electrodes) and, more recently, microbial fuel cells and polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cells (with emphasis on the assessment of the performance of bi-metallic and perovskite electrocatalysts for oxygen reduction reaction). He has been advisor of 5 PhD theses in the aforementioned scientific areas, as well as project leader or coordinator of 13 research projects (4 funded by the European Union), having also participated in many others. \r\nHe was awarded by the Academy of Athens, Greece (1992), for his publication in Nature (343, pp. 625-627, 1990) which referred to the origin of electrochemical promotion in catalysis. He has been Guest Editor/Co-Editor of special issues of Solid State Ionics (2000), Journal of Applied Electrochemistry (2012) and Topics in Catalysis (2015). He has acted as reviewer of a large number of submitted manuscripts in over 20 international journals, mainly in the areas of applied electrochemistry and electrochemical engineering, heterogeneous catalysis and solid state ionics. He has been member of the organizing committee of 7 international conferences and summer schools, and chairman/co-chairman of 4 of them. He has also participated in the advisory/scientific committee of 13 international conferences and summer schools.\r\nProfessor S. Bebelis has been a longstanding member of the International Society of Electrochemistry (ISE) and has served as ISE Regional Representative of Greece for two consecutive terms, 2011-2013 and 2013-2015. He is a member of the Electrochemical Society and a member of the EFCE Working Party on Electrochemical Engineering (EFCE/WPEE), since 1996. He also served as Chairman of the EFCE/WPEE from 2007 to 2010.
