SYMPOSIUM and
ROUND TABLE TOPICS
The exhaustion of natural resources (quantity and quality) and CO2 emission controls are becoming increasingly important worldwide especially in materials production industries. In this Symposium, the focus of debate is narrowed in steel industries and related area. In the blast furnace root, countermeasures against low quality iron ores and coals are urgent subjects to study in agglomeration processes, such as sintering, pelletizing and cokemaking. After taking these subjects into consideration, we have to control the total blast furnace root or even the integrated steel making plant to make more efficient and to be more eco-friendly and less CO2 emission. In the other virgin metal, or iron production root, such as direct reduction and smelting reduction using iron ore, countermeasures against low quality iron ores and fuels or coals are also urgent subjects to study and at the same time to control CO2 emission. Used steel recycling root is also important to produce crude steel in electric furnaces as well as the partly use of scrap in the oxygen-convertor or even in the blast furnace; in these cases how to overcome the tramp element problems is also urgent subjects to study and at the same time to control CO2 emission.
Carbonization of liquid iron from coke as solid / liquid reaction (1) as well as that of solid steel from hydrocarbon as solid / gas reaction (2) are also important subjects to control the lower part of blast furnace reactions efficiently (1) as well as to reduce both resource gas volume and CO2 emission in carbonization furnaces (2).
In addition, utilization of dusts from iron and steel production plants and disposal of municipal wastes are also important subjects to reduce environmental loads and ironmaking or steelmaking technologies can be applied to these processing. Charcoal and biomass uses in ironmaking processes are also attractive for minimizing CO2 emission and fossil fuel use.
In summary, "Dust Processing-Energy-Environment in Iron and Steel Industries" are the main topics included in USUI International Symposium for celebrating his 50 years of research carrier.
