TAKANO INTERNATIONAL SYMPOSIUM
on Sustainable Metals & Alloys Processing
takano
Bio | CV | Publications

This major symposium is in honor of the distinguished work and lifetime achievements of Prof. Cyro Takano. Professor Takano is a well-known figure for his deeply impact in raw materials, metals and alloys production, recycling, environment, energy, powder metallurgy etc., especially in their application for developing sustainable new technologies.

Prof. Cyro Takano is, at the same time, an industrial and academic personality. His Industrial activity includes his positions as CEO of TECNORED and long term Project coordinator at CBMM - Brazilian Niobium Company. His academic activity is reflected in his BSC and PhD degrees from University of Sao Paulo, MSC from Stanford University (USA), Pos-Doc at Tohoku University (Japan) and Denver Research Institute (USA), as well as Specialization on Management and Administration of research projects at Stanford University, Denver Research University and Vanderbilt University and his longtime professorship in Sao Paulo University, in which his research group is internationally recognized especially for self-reducing processes for primary metal production (iron. tin, manganese, ferro-chromium)

Throughout his career, his activity has impacted various fields, such as:

Raw materials processing: ore-carbon composite pellet and self-reducing pellets; charcoal making; biomass processing for partial substituting of PCI (pulverized coal injection); iron ore sintering.

Ore reduction and smelting (ferrous, non-ferrous and ferro-alloys): decrepitation, swelling, coalescence of metallic phase; behavior during reduction of ore-carbon and dust-carbon composites involving solid-solid, solid-gas and solid-liquid-gas phases; Calcium and Magnesium production by silicothermic vacuum reduction.

Metal refining: pyrometallurgical refining of silicon; dephosphorization and desulfurization of steel; decopperization of Ferro-Nickel; high purity niobium production (Electron Beam) etc.

Environment, recycling, energy. Recycling of dusts, slugs and solid wastes from metallurgical industries; zero solid waste for integrated steelmaking processes; recovery of valuable metals from wastes of Electric Arc Steelmaking and at Nickel production (Caron Process); CO2 mitigation through energy efficient processes of charcoal making and alternatives using more biomaterial in metallurgical industries.

Others: powder metallurgy (powder production and sintering); ferro-niobium characterization, carburizing processes, dissolution process of ferroalloys in cast iron and steel, etc.

Complementary: Phase Transformation in Metals and Alloys, Physical Metallurgy, Thermal and Thermomechanical Processing of Steels, Tribology and Surface Engineering, etc.

The symposium is organized on the occasion of his 2 anniversaries in the same year: His age anniversary (he becomes 75 in August 2015) and scientific anniversary (in 2015 he reaches 45 years of continuous scientific contributions.

This rare multinational synergy of academic and industrial activities will be specifically reflected in this international symposium, which will feature plenary, keynote and invited lectures on fundamentals, technology and innovations on metals and alloys processing; Raw materials and their processing, progress on reduction, melting and smelting; Covering iron and steelmaking, ferro-alloys and nonferrous metals; Refining and solidification; Energy, environment and recycling in metallurgical industries.

Contributed articles will be doubled peer-reviewed and will be published in the Conference Official Proceedings having an ISBN and an ISSN number. Selected contributed articles will also be published in professional reputed Journals that the organizing committee has reached agreement with for special numbers.

An inspiring event with two Nobel Prize Laureates will serve as the "Curtain-Opening" event of the Summit (Sunday afternoon/evening, 4 October 2015).

Prof. Dan Shechtman, 2011 Nobel Laureate in Chemistry, will present and interact on the topic "Technological Entrepreneurship - Key to Sustainable World Peace and Prosperity". Besides being the 2011 Nobel Laureate in Chemistry, Professor Shechtman is known as one of the Pioneers of Technological Start-up Revolution (Financial Times, 2012). It is an inspiring accounting on his experience on the role of technological entrepreneurship on the sustainable world peace and prosperity with rich advises for success drawn from successful entrepreneurs he helped train.

Prof. Ei-ichi Negishi, 2010 Nobel Prize in Chemistry, will present and interact on the topic of the special role of metals at the service of organic life: How they help the synthesis of organic compounds in general and the role of metal-based reactions for an easier and efficient synthesis of complex organic compounds, in particular.
