This major symposium is in honor of the distinguished work and lifetime achievements of Prof. John A. Meech.

Professor Meech who unexpectedly passed away in middle of February 2015 is a well-known figure for his deeply impact in sustainable mining operations, mining remediation, mining automation etc.
Throughout his career, his activity has impacted various fields, such as:
  • Technical Aspects of Sustainability in Mining (Energy Efficiency in Mining, Mine Automation (safety, productivity, and environmental protection), Open Pit versus Underground, Tailings Storage Facilities and Methods, Phyto-reclamation and phyto-mining, Integration of Mining and Processing Operations, Production, Uses, and Recycling of Metals and Minerals, Continuous Improvement - new technologies, innovations and best practices).
  • Environmental Aspects of Sustainable Mining (Small-scale and Artisanal Mining, Dealing with Legacy Mine Sites (orphaned and abandoned), Environmental Monitoring and Pollution Mitigation, Acid Rock Drainage and Metal-Leaching, Biodiversity and Ecosystems, Transportation of Mined Products, Dust Control and Mitigation)
  • Socio-Political Issues in Sustainable Mining (Regulating Mining in the Third World, Environmental Assessment and Permitting, Social-Licence-to-Mine (involvement of communities), Cultural Context of Honesty, Transparency, and Integrity, Working with Aboriginal peoples, Climate Change and Mining, Mine Closure and Post-closure, Enterprise Facilitation (new businesses to sustain the community)
Prof. Meech's numerous achievements among others include:
  • Seminal Paper on Fuzzy Logic Control in Mining - with Tony Harris, 1987
  • Seminal Paper on Mercury Pollution from Rainforest Burning - with Marcello Veiga, 1994
  • Development of the "Smart Mold" Concept in Continuous Steel Billet Casting - with Indira Samarasekera and Keith Brimacombe - 1993/1994/1999
  • Development of Methods to Deal with Mercury Use at Artisanal Mining Sites (34 papers) - with Marcello Veiga, 1992-2012
  • Energy Reduction in Comminution using High-velocity impact (19 papers) - with Desmond Tromans, 1999-2012
  • The Millennium Plug Project at Britannia Mine (6 papers) - with Brennan Lang, 2001-2006
  • Development of an Autonomous Mine Haulage Truck System and related Mine Automation (23 papers) with Juliana Parreira and others, 2003-2014
Prof. Meech was recipient of the last year 2014 Fray International Sustainability Award. He was the academic winner of this prestigious award amongst 2 Nobel Prize Laureates, one CEO, one Minister and one President who received this award at the same event in Cancun, July 2nd, 2014 during 2014 Sustainable Industrial Processing Summit / Shechtman International Symposium. More information and videos can be found here: www.flogen.org/awards.php?spage=2&sp=3&sp2=Meech
and www.flogen.org/ShechtmanSymposium/?gid=68

The symposium is organized to celebrate his achievements during an entire life that was cut short in his peak of scientific and community activities.
The symposium will feature plenary, keynote and invited lectures on fundamentals, technology and innovations on mining operations and mining remediation.

Contributed articles will be doubled peer-reviewed and will be published in the Conference Official Proceedings having an ISBN and an ISSN number. Selected contributed articles will also be published in professional reputed Journals that the organizing committee has reached agreement with for special numbers.

An inspiring event with two Nobel Prize Laureates will serve as the "Curtain-Opening" event of the Summit (Sunday afternoon/evening, 4 October 2015).

Prof. Dan Shechtman, 2011 Nobel Laureate in Chemistry, will present and interact on the topic "Technological Entrepreneurship - Key to Sustainable World Peace and Prosperity". Besides being the 2011 Nobel Laureate in Chemistry, Professor Shechtman is known as one of the Pioneers of Technological Start-up Revolution (Financial Times, 2012). It is an inspiring accounting on his experience on the role of technological entrepreneurship on the sustainable world peace and prosperity with rich advises for success drawn from successful entrepreneurs he helped train.

Prof. Ei-ichi Negishi, 2010 Nobel Prize in Chemistry, will present and interact on the topic of the special role of metals at the service of organic life: How they help the synthesis of organic compounds in general and the role of metal-based reactions for an easier and efficient synthesis of complex organic compounds, in particular.
