DR. FLORIAN KONGOLI CRETE EXPLORATION: FROM THE ICONIC MINOAN PEAK SANCTUARY OF MOUNT JUKTAS TO THE HISTORIC KOULES FORTRESS IN HERAKLION399
He visited Mount Juktas, situated in north-central Crete and known as Giouchtas in
Greek, which held significant religious importance for the Minoan civilization. Adjacent to
the palaces of Knossos and Fourni, as well as the megaron at Vathypetro, it served as a
prominent peak sanctuary in the Minoan world. Besides its religious significance, Mount
Juktas is renowned for its resemblance to the eternal, slumbering face of Zeus. The
photos captured from the terrace of the Aquila Atlantis Hotel in Heraklion showcase the
majestic beauty of Mount Juktas.

The Koules Fortress, also known as Castello a Mare, stands as an impressive symbol of historical significance at the entrance of the old port of Heraklion, Crete, Greece. Its origins trace back to the 8th century when the Emirate of Crete first fortified the site. It underwent several transformations throughout its history, including constructing a new tower during the second Byzantine era, which was later destroyed in 1303. However, the current fortress was erected in 1540 under the control of the Republic of Venice, which then governed Crete. Despite efforts to fortify it with cannons in 1630, the fortress ultimately fell to the Ottoman Empire in 1669. Although restored, the fortress remains a testament to its past, preserving the atmosphere and architecture of its capture in 1669.
