    Abstract:

The corrosion of some metallic inert anodes during electrolysis of cryolite – alumina melts was studied.
By SEM analyses, the structure and composition of the reaction layer were measured, as well as the distribution of some elements (O, Fe, Ni, Al, F, etc) in this layer.
The oxygen content into the reaction layer increases from the metal core to the outside part of the layer, but the content of the metals into the reaction layer decreases. This shows that the discharge of the oxygen takes place near the interface: reaction layer/electrolyte and the diffusion of the metals is hindered.
Due to this, the corrosion of some metallic inert anodes is low and the impurity level in the aluminium cathodes is also low.
A composition of an alloy very resistent to the oxidation was found, which could be used as inert anodes for aluminium electrolysis.
